Carp Fishing Reels
Here at Bristol Angling we stock a large range of fishing reels from the biggest brands, including Shimano, Daiwa, Fox, ESP, Wychwood, Sonik and more.
Along with your carp fishing rod, your reel is another essential item when it comes to carp fishing. Your reel allows you to cast your baited rig into the lake, as well as retrieve it, and with any luck it will include a large carp.
No matter whether you’re a keen carp angler looking to cast to the horizon or just looking to flick a bait in the margins, we have a great range of carp fishing reels to suit every angler. As a specialist fishing tackle shop you’ll also find a selection of custom-built reels, specifically built for us by Daiwa and unique to the Bristol Angling Centre.
Choosing the right Reel for Carp Fishing
When choosing a reel one of the most important aspects is to pick a size which compliments your rod perfectly, creating a nice balanced set up. As a rule, there are two types of reel used in Carp fishing, the Freespool and the Big Pit.
Freespool/Baitrunner Reels
A Freespool or Baitrunner reel features a lever at the back of the reel which allows you to quickly engage the clutch to allow the fish to take line freely on the bite, only disengaging once you turn the handle. This can be adjusted to increase or decrease the resistance which is perfect for a free running setup or where there is a need to lock everything up tightly because you’re snag fishing. These reels are perfect for fishing on small to medium sized waters where casting isn't too much of an issue and are also great for stalking and floater fishing.
Big Pit Reels
Big Pit reels are generally much larger in size, holding more line allowing you to cast further and wind in quicker due to the increased retrieve ratio. This is useful when fishing at longer distances and when playing fish around weed or snags as it allows you to wind more line for every turn of the handle, meaning you can pull fish away from dangerous areas far quicker. Big Pit reels are best suited to longer rods, generally 12ft and above, and are great for gaining extra distance where required.
